MEMORANDUM BY STEVE FORBES
March 21, 1997
TO: REPUBLICAN OFFICIALS AND CONSERVATIVE LEADERS
FROM: STEVE FORBES, HONORARY CHAIRMAN, AMERICANS FOR HOPE, GROWTH
AND OPPORTUNITY
SUBJECT: ACT LIKE A MAJORITY
Congressional Republicans nearly destroyed their party this week by effectively
giving up the fight for tax cuts and tax simplification. Voters can rightly
ask: For what purpose did we elect a Republican Congress? Are Republicans
there to act as tax collectors for the welfare state?
Republicans must now take the initiative on the Budget, Tax Simplification,
Social Security, Health care, Medicare, Education, Crime and Foreign Policy.
For inspiration, look at what foes of infanticide, euphemistically termed
partial birth abortion, were able to achieve with a clear sense of mission
and energy.
Republicans should bring the same kind of positive, bold energy to their
issues. That will improve the lives of and opportunity for tens of millions
of Americans.
Why act like whipped dogs, waiting for Bill Clinton to take the lead? Just
imagine Republicans waiting for leadership from Bill Clinton!!
This passivity and timidity must go. Otherwise voters will soon say, "It's
time for you to go!"
We have the right philosophy, right principles, the right policies.
Let's go with it!
